Permission to come aboard sir!

Over the week-end of 10th/11 June 2023 Breighton hosted a group of intrepid aviators from the south. Members of the Fleet Air Arm Squadron took the opportunity of the great weather we are currently experiencing and came along to see for themselves that there is life north of Watford and Breighton isn’t beyond the Arctic Circle.

The Fleet Air Arm Squadron was formed as the flying wing of the Fleet Air Arm Officers’ Association and whilst in the main it’s members are ex RN aviator types, members of all three armed forces are now amongst their ranks even some flying Royal Marines and an ex nuclear submarine commander. There is also a small civilian element with members who have flown both commercially and privately.

Each year the Senior Pilot (SPLOT) together with the Squadron CO put together a Flying Programme of aerodromes to visit throughout the summer months.

Breighton has been in their sights for some time and was thoroughly enjoyed by the group (pictured) that could make it. In the words of our SPLOT who flew up from RNAS Yeovilton:

“Breighton is a jewel in the crown of northern GA airfields. Well worth a visit, this aviator-run airfield is highly professional, immaculately presented with a great new clubhouse accompanied by excellent catering services and stuffed to the gunwales with beautifully maintained classic aircraft. A must-do stop if you are in the area.”

Anthony "HMS" Stevens

Following an illustrious career, spanning over 40 years, HM joined the RN’s Royal Fleet Auxiliary Service followed by the Merchant Navy. All of which all led him to become General Manager of the World, well that’s actually a ship called ‘The World’. His travels took him from the frozen arctic to the balmy tropics.

During his time, HM has encountered wars ranging from the Congo in the south to the Cod Wars in the north, then Cyprus, and finally the Falklands, as well as humanitarian disaster relief.

Now retired, HM has published his first novel, ‘Murky Waters’, a somewhat saucy, nautical crime mystery saga. When not writing, HM spends his spare time flying a beautiful Robin Regent airplane and is currently working on his second novel, 'Hebridean Waters'.
